Essay Plans
For students who already have a solid sense of their college lists and the process as a whole, and who are solely looking for college essay support, I offer these two options:
Common App Essay Plan
With this plan, I provide guidance through the process of writing and revising the main Common App essay (a 650-word essay focused on one of seven prompts). This includes discussing strategies for approaching the prompts, examining sample essays, brainstorming topics, and working through the process of writing and revising this essay.
Essay Plan +8
With this plan, I coach students through the process of writing the Common App essay and supplemental essays for up to eight colleges. Multiple colleges within the University of California application just count as one, as do other colleges that are not part of the Common App. This plan also includes guidance for completing the activities section and other aspects of the Common App.
With both of these essay plans, I will:
Begin working with students in the spring of junior year, introducing brainstorming activities and talking with them about the effectiveness of a range of sample essays.
Engage students in conversations about what they care about, guiding them toward topics that are meaningful to them and fun to write about.
Provide insider perspective about how to best represent themselves to an admissions committee.
Show them strategies for making their writing vivid, memorable, substantive, and authentic.
Help them to understand issues of audience, structure, syntax, and mechanics.
Coach students to stay on task and complete the applications in a timely manner.
Offer students access to Counselmore, an online resource for organizing application requirements and deadlines.
Encourage students to feel a sense of ownership over their writing and to cultivate a personal voice, while also helping them to produce essays that are clear, well-structured, and polished.
