About ALB College Consulting

In the ever-changing landscape of college admission, students and families can feel understandably anxious about how to proceed. ALB College Consulting LLC offers calming guidance and insider perspective for effectively and authentically navigating this often-daunting experience.

Whether a student is already committed to a particular academic passion, tentatively curious about a variety of interests, 100% undecided, and/or lost and bewildered by it all, I provide counseling that helps students to ask thoughtful questions about who they are and what they care about. I coach students to make informed decisions about their courses and activities, research colleges deliberately, present themselves in a compelling way in their essays, and take ownership over navigating the path to a fulfilling life beyond high school. I also strive to support families by providing a structure for students to stay on task. From my many years of advocating for students on both sides of the admission process, I approach this work with expertise, honesty, and compassion.

Guiding Principles…

  • That the college application process, if done right, can provide students with a meaningful exploration of their goals, identities, and curiosities.

  • That students should feel a sense of ownership and autonomy in this process, even as they keep in mind parental priorities about cost, geography, and/or other factors.

  • That staying organized and on-task makes things much less stressful.

  • That a thoughtfully constructed, balanced list is an essential element in a positive college search process.

  • That essay writing, while not easy, can be satisfying, and a valuable opportunity for students to develop their skills of self-expression as they strive to convey who they are to an admissions reader.

  • That the most selective, name-brand, “elite” college is not necessarily the best fit.

  • That there is not one perfect school but rather a range of places where a student can be happy and thrive.

“Ann was wonderful and extremely helpful through the crazy college admissions process. She first helped me narrow down and create a well-balanced list. After that, she left comments on and reviewed all my supplemental essays. She always made herself available and supported me through the entire process. I would highly recommend her and cannot say enough good things about her!!”

— Student, Gaithersburg, MD

“Ann proved to be the voice of calm and reason in the college search for our daughter. Though this was our family's third time through the admissions process, it was daunting nonetheless. COVID/test-optional/more applicants ... the landscape was changing and we were not certain where to begin. After a brief meeting with us, Ann was able to effectively work with our daughter; they came up with a list of potential schools, which was great. Most importantly, though, was Ann's ability to keep our daughter on task. I highly recommend working with Ann - ultra professional, obviously experienced and super organized.“

— Parent, Fairfield, CT

“Along with giving me confidence throughout what — for me and many others — could be a daunting process, Ann helped me understand how to write a good college application essay. Before beginning my work with Ann, I did not understand that application essays follow their own format, logic, and criteria. Ann broke down the process so that I could improve my drafts and create finished products I was proud of.”

— Student, Cambridge, MA

“My daughter felt comfortable talking with Ann from their first meeting. She trusted Ann and shared her honest opinions and feelings with her, which is crucial in the college selection process. Ann provided my daughter with expert guidance in writing her essays while also encouraging my her true voice to come through. She was accepted into her first choice college and is thrilled. I could not recommend Ann more highly!”

— Parent, Brooklyn, NY

“Ms. Bruno was so receptive to both my general and specific questions regarding the application process, and she gave me helpful suggestions about my Common App essay. It was very comforting to talk with someone who has experience in admissions and teaching, as she combined her knowledge of editing and the world of higher education.”

— Student, Vienna, VA

“There is no denying that the college application process can be extremely daunting. I certainly thought so. However, with Ann's help, I was able to take it step-by-step, staying on top of all my applications through an organized, well thought-out schedule. Whenever I felt confused, stressed, or scared, Ann was there to answer all of my questions as well as offer words of wisdom and encouragement. I greatly enjoyed working with her. “

“I had a fantastic college application experience thanks to Ann’s help. I felt like I was always prepared to meet deadlines and that I had a strong sense of what I wanted in a school. I was confident in my college list and essays, and it resulted in a successful process for me. The feedback Ann gave on my essays and support she showed throughout the entire process was so valuable.”

“We were referred to Ann by another college counselor and we couldn't have been more thrilled. To start, she was a great personality match for us and for our daughter, which was of primary importance from our perspective. We were not interested in getting our daughter into the "best" college but rather having someone help her, and us, navigate the process. We left most of the process up to our daughter and Ann, but Ann's detailed follow up emails after each meeting they had helped us stay informed about all the details of the journey. And, throughout, Ann was a great sounding board for us as parents, helping navigate our own questions and concerns and thoughts and exploration of opportunities for our daughter. Her ability to balance her two audiences - the student and the parent - was masterful! We can't recommend Ann highly enough!

— Parent, Needham, MA

“Ms. Bruno was very helpful throughout my college process. She helped me present my best self in each of my essays. She was very kind and gracious while assuring that I stayed on track and received the feedback that I needed. I got into my top school of choice, and I'm grateful to Ms. Bruno for all of her help. “

— Student, Farmington, CT

“Ann made the process of writing and refining my son's college essays a much less stressful and onerous process than we initially feared. She kept him on a schedule to meet the various college application deadlines and gave my son feedback in a way that made him receptive and responsive. It was a relatively pain-free process because Ann is calm, objective, and deadline-oriented. As a result, our son was accepted by a number of colleges including his first choice.”

— Parent, Barrington, RI

“Ann’s no-nonsense, realistic outlook guided my daughter (and her anxious parents) through the maze of appropriate school choices and the intricate application process. Ann culled an authentic, personal, and age-appropriate essay out of my daughter, a normally very self-conscious, reluctant writer. She helped to maintain my child’s focus and keep her on task.“

— Parent, Newton, MA

“Ms. Bruno was extremely helpful throughout the college application process. I was overwhelmed going into it but she broke it down into small steps that were easy to accomplish. Overall, the process turned out to be stress-free and pleasant. I even got into my dream school!”

— Student, Barrington, RI

“Ann's support was exactly what we needed. She helped our son manage the process and provided great feedback in a way that he could hear and act upon. Certainly the end result was important, but how we got there was just as critical. So grateful we had her as our guide.”

— Parent, Cranston, RI

“Ms. Ann was incredibly helpful with all aspects of the process. Going into it, I felt very lost and disoriented, but Ms. Ann had faith in me and helped me boost my confidence. With any questions that I had, she would answer them or find the answer. I loved working with her!”
